There are three research areas I am involved with:

1) Tomato Breeding: development of insect and disease resistant hydroponic greenhouse tomato varieties that are adapted to the North American climate and has better fruit quality characters.

2) Plant Reproductive Barriers: Understanding how genes, genomes and cytoplasms affect and/or interact to prevent or promote fertilization and seed development in plants.

Mandy Cummins conducted research use of thermophilic anaerobic digester liquid effluent as an alternative fertilizer for lettuce and tomato hydroponic production, 2003-2004.

Tim Gunderson conducted research on the effectiveness of juice from unripe American pokeweed berries (Phytolacca decandra) as a molluscicide for zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha), 2000-2001

Matthew Webster studied "RNA and sequence comparisons of S genes from self compatible and self incompatible Lycopersicon species", 1999-2000

Angela Haas conducted honors research on "Implementation of the National Science Education Standards by High School Life Science Teachers in the State of Iowa", 1998-1999.

Mathew Severidt conducted research on "GFP as a Reporter to Examine Pollen Development in Flowering Plants", 1998-1999.

Robert Thompson was involved with the "Isolation and Characterization of Genes involved in Aromatic Acid Biosynthesis in Zea mays". This project is being done at Pioneer Hybrid International, 1998-1999.

Angela Dralle conducted honors research on "Science in Governmental Decision Making: Assessing the Adequacy and Accessibility of Information in the Federal Judicial and Legislative Branches of the United States Government". This project was co-advised by Drs. Barbara Liedl & Jim Zaffiro, 1997-1998

Adam Dupuy conducted honors research on "Sequence Determination and Comparison of S-gene Related Fragments of Lycopersicon esculentum", 1996-1997
