WVSU | West Virginia State University

WVSU is a great place for students who love to sing. The Department of Music has two choirs for WVSU students, the Concert Choir and the State Singers vocal jazz ensemble.

Concert Choir is open to all students and performs choral music from a wide variety of styles, including classical, folksong arrangements, African American spirituals, world music, and pop arrangements. The Concert Choir presents several concerts on campus each semester and performs frequently at campus events and community events throughout the Kanawha Valley. The choir was recently invited to perform with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra as the guest choir on its Pops series concert "The Music of Queen" in the spring of 2012 and will perform again with the WVSO on its "Holiday Pops" concert in December of 2012. Participation is open to all students who want to improve their own singing, perform at a high level of excellence, and have a great time doing it. Please register for Music 150 and come ready to make some great music!

The State Singers is an auditioned touring ensemble of 8-12 singers that specializes in vocal jazz and performs other styles of music intended for small vocal ensemble. When performing jazz, the group is fully mic'd and is backed by a jazz rhythm section. Auditions occur in the first two days of fall semester, and participation requires a full-year commitment. The State Singers act as ambassadors for the University and frequently perform off campus for important community and cultural events. The choir also tours each spring. Recent tours have taken the group to Virginia Beach, VA, St. Louis, MO, and Cleveland, OH. The group will be touring New York, NY in the spring of 2013. Please contact
Dr. Dirk Johnson for audition information.
