Program Outcomes

Thank you for your interest in Recreation and  Recreation and Tourism studies at WVSU.  A major in this area promotes understanding and awareness of the intersections between the social sciences and the environmental systems that support parks, recreation and tourism programming and management.  As Director of Recreation and Tourism Studies, I am pleased to have the opportunity to introduce you to our program.  Within the Department of Health, Human Performance and Leisure Studies, the Bachelor of Science in Recreation offers two areas of academic emphasis:  Recreation Services and Sustainable Tourism Systems.  Both areas require 120 credit hours to graduate.  Successful students in the program also participate in a high quality, pre-approved internship as a requirement for earning a Bachelor of Science in either program.
The Recreation Services emphasis area offers coursework designed to prepare students for careers in experiential recreation planning and the management of recreation resources.   Graduates find opportunities in both the public and private sectors working at resorts, recreation facilities, nature centers and camps, government agencies (federal, state and local) and park settings.
The Tourism specialization is designed for students with career goals aligned with sustainable tourism system planning, nature and heritage tourism management, and tourism promotion.  Graduates pursue professional opportunities within the hospitality industry, with tourism service providers, as tourism entrepreneurs, event / program planners and facilities managers.
We invite you to explore further the career opportunities in Recreation and Recreation and Tourism Studies at West Virginia State University.  Above, you may access program status sheets that provide additional specifics about the course and program requirements for each of the emphasis areas in this degree program.  For more information, please contact me at 304-766-3003 or e-mail me at srichards@wvstateu.edu.  Let’s get started launching or enhancing your career opportunities in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Studies!
